Family Friendly Things to Do in Minneapolis, MN

If you’re staying with us here at the Marquette Hotel with the whole family in tow, you most definitely won’t be lacking for things to do in our greater neighborhood. Here’s a mere sampling of the numerous surefire kid-friendly destinations just a short trip away from your family vacation headquarters at our downtown Minneapolis hotel!

You’ve got not one but two fantastic zoos to visit as a Marquette Hotel guest: the Como Park Zoo in St. Paul and the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, a southern Twin Cities suburb only about a half-hour away from us. Established in 1897, the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is open each and every day of the year for free (though a small donation of $3 per adult and $2 per child is suggested). Critters range from puffins and sloths to bison and giraffes, and there’s an on-site amusement park to up the major kid appeal.

The Minnesota Zoo, notable for being an early pioneer of housing animals by habitat, includes its own fantastic menagerie, including some charismatic native critters—from gray wolves to black bears—displayed along the Medtronic Minnesota Trail. The Minnesota Zoo also has extensive children’s-oriented activity zones, including the Woodland Adventure and Hanifl Family Wild Woods play areas, the Conservation Carousel, and the seasonal Wells Fargo Family Farm (which opened March 23rd) and summertime Splash Pad.

Science Museum of Minnesota

Hands-on science learning of the highest caliber awaits at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, home to such awesome permanent exhibits as RACE: Are We So Different?, The Human Body GalleryDinosaurs & Fossils, and the brand-new Sportsology. The museum also harbors a massive IMAX/Omnimax Omnitheater.

Current temporary exhibitions at the Science Museum of Minnesota include Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO® Bricks, which showcases 20 of the world’s greatest skyscrapers portrayed in miniature LEGO scale and offers kids the opportunity to cobble together their own colorful architecture.

Mall of America

Well, sure, you can shop till you drop here, but you can also let the kiddos loose in Nickelodeon Universe—heapfuls of rides, heapfuls of instantly recognizable cartoon characters—as well as SEA Life Minnesota Aquarium, home to everything from alligator gars and freshwater stingrays to sea turtles, sawfish, and sand tiger sharks.

Children’s Theatre Company

This highly esteemed theater has been delighting kids and adults alike since the 1960s. It’s currently wrapping up its 2017-2018 season with Corduroy (through May 20th), based on the popular Don Freeman books, and Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax (April 15th-June 10th). The 2018-2019 season, meanwhile, kicks off in July with The Best Summer Ever!
